Whitney grew up in a small-town in Stokes County, North Carolina and attended college at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, where she was a pitcher for the NCAA Patriots' softball team. Whitney graduated from George Mason with a Bachelor of Science degree in the Administration of Justice concentrating in Law and Society, and soon thereafter earned her national paralegal certification from the National Federation of Paralegals Association. Prior to becoming a licensed attorney, Whitney worked as a paralegal for five years focusing her experience to only issues related to family and domestic law, primarily in Mecklenburg County.
